December 2012

From the Rector
We had our gift day on 18th November, thank you all who gave, it really is much appreciated. We had 2 extremely generous donations which has brought the figure raised, as we go to print, of approximately €11,000. This amount will go towards the loss of income from the car boot sales and the loss of Weight Watchers as tenants allowing us to limp into another year. As the New Year approaches please consider giving by weekly envelope, which allows you to plan your giving or by monthly bankers order. Contact the parish office to arrange either 462 6006.

On the 6th November the church hosted the I.T.T. business prizes and on the 7th and 8th , I attended the college’s conferrals in the Victory Centre. It was lovely to see the students and their families celebrating the culminations of their studies, among which there were a couple of parishioners. On 9th November we had  a Remembrance Service for deceased students and staff of the I.T.T in St. Maelruain’s Church.

I attended the Discovery service in Christchurch Cathedral organised by our former Curate Obinna on 18th November and on the 21st November I took part in the Remembrance Service in  Mt. Seskin Community College (formerly Jobstown College) for the 1st years and answered questions on the Church of Ireland afterwards.

Victims support celebrated 25 years in Tallaght  also on 21st November, they are there to support all who have been victims of crime however small, contact them on 459 9511 or 085 154 0378, victimsuppinfo@gmail.com

On 23rd Nov. I attended the Tallaght Person of the Year, Amy had been nominated for her voluntary work overseas. It was in the Maldron Hotel this year, a new and bigger venue for the event, and it worked out well with the circular tables.

On the evening of the 25th I went along to the ‘Massey’ Christmas Concert in St. Aengus, Balrothery, it was truly a magnificent evening. They are having another one in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Ballyroan, Rathfarnham, on 15th Dec at 8pm, I would highly recommend it at €10 a ticket for concert hall standard.

May I take this opportunity to wish all the readers of the parish newsletter a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.                                                                                                                                                                William.

Funeral
The funeral of Jean Furney took place here in St. Maelruain’s on Thursday 8th November. We extend our condolences to her husband Norman, sons Gary and Paul, to her daughter in law Michelle, to granddaughter Heather and to the wider family circle.

Jean’s ashes were buried on Wednesday 28th November  in the Church graveyard.

There will be a Tree Planting Ceremony in the courtyard at 10.30. We will also have some old photos on display in the hall to bring back some happy memories.

5th and 6th class hosted Assembly on Thursday 29th November, the theme was Daniel and the Lion’s Den, we had parents in attendance. On Thursday 13th December Junior infants will perform their nativity play.

As you are all probably aware school grants have been cut and the school is finding it difficult to pay the bills this year so we have decided to produce a School Calendar to help raise funds. We hope you will buy either the personalised one with your child’s photo on the front for €10 or the regular one with the staff on the front cover for €8. An ideal Christmas gift! Please contact the school office to place your order. 4521 7933.

The School Church service will be on Tuesday December 18th at 11am in St. Maelruain’s Church.

School News

These notes were received in time for the Church Review Magazine deadline on 15th May. Hopefully the principal will give us an update in September.

The summer term is always a busy one and this year is no exception. Our Whole School Evaluation (WSE) report will be posted on the web eventually, with the holidays coming up it’s difficult to know whether it will be before or after the summer. The Board of Management (BOM) and staff were presented with a draft version orally on 31st March. We were quite happy with it.

We had a Special Needs Assistants review on Tuesday 5th May. A decision on our allocation of resources will be given shortly.

As usual we are involved in the National Spring Clean, unfortunately on the day we planned was so wet that we had to postpone it for a week. Thank you to those parents who helped.

The Department of Education and Science has called all Principals and members of the Special Education Teams to a seminar on, “Meeting the Needs of Students with Special Educational Needs through Individualised Planning.” This was on 7th May.

A very exciting concept called “Marine Dimensions” is coming to our school on Tuesday 12th May to show slides of marine life to the children in Junior Infants to 4th class. They will have a Touch-Pool with them, the children will get to handle some of the creatures. On Thursday 14th they will present the same show for the children in 5th and 6th class who will then go on “Safari” to Sandycove!

3rd and 4th class with Ms. Annette Boles are going to the Ark on Friday 15th to do a Dance and Percussion workshop.

On Tuesday 26th May, Ms. Caroline Rountree is taking 1st and 2nd class, with Ms. Bernie Dixon (SNA) to the Ark for a Fossil Art workshop.

Induction Day for the new children and their Parents who are coming to our school in September will take place on Wed 27th May.

Edel will be going on Maternity Leave on Thursday 28th May. We wish her every luck and we’re eagerly waiting to hear the good news in June! Edel’s replacement will be Ms. Karen Hendy.

The children in 5th & 6th class will be going on their school tour to Dalkey Quarry and Killiney Hill, they will be abseiling and orienteering! The rest of the school are all going to the Little Gym in Liffey Valley on 16th June.

There will be a School Development Planning day on Tuesday 9th June, the children will have the day off.

Thanks to the School Completion Programme the whole school will be going to the Civic Theatre for a production of Peter Pan on the 12th June. We will look forward to the treat!

The children in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class will be going to a Sports Day, organised by Citywise, on Thursday 11th June. Our School Sports Day will be on Friday 19th June, starting at 10.00am. There will be a football match between our school and St. John’s National School, Clondalkin on Thursday 24th June. Up St. Maelruain’s!

The Art Exhibition will take place on Thursday 25th June and the 6th Class Graduation will be on Friday 26th June. School will close for the summer vacation on Tuesday 30th June re-opening for the new school year on Monday 31st August.

School News

Well the big news of the month was definitely our Whole School Evaluation (WSE)! Ms. Eileen O’Sullivan spent the week of 23rd February with us. We await the report at this stage and hope that our school receives a positive and encouraging evaluation.

Our school uniform was introduced in September 1996. We have decided that it needs to be brought in to the 21st century and we are changing the colour of the polo-shirt to a rather fetching yellow. It looks lovely and the majority of the school community are happy with it. We are also using a new supplier and the parents will be able to buy the uniform directly from the shop rather than the school having to order for them. This will be a great help to our wonderful secretary, Ms. Karen Mooney. Karen is normally tripping over uniforms for June and September!

The children in Junior and Senior Infants with Mrs. Edel Beckett and Ms. Geraldine Healy, Special Needs Assistant (SNA) and Edel’s Mum, Mrs. Yvonne McGlynn went to the Tallaght Library on Monday 9th March for a bi-lingual Drama of “The Three Little Pigs,” it was enjoyed by all.

5th and 6th class are going to the Zoo on Friday 20th March. They are doing a project on Nature/Wildlife.

The Basketball Tournament organised by Tallaght Community Gardaí will take place on Tuesday 31st March in the National Basketball

The children in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class have been busy planting the various fruit and vegetables that were sent to all the schools this year from Agri Aware. It’s a really good project and the children love watching everything growing and of course finally eating them!

Once again we will be involved in the Skipathon this year. The money raised is for the Irish Heart Foundation.

School will close for the Easter Vacation on Friday 3rd April, re-opening for the summer term on Monday 20th April.

The run-down to Christmas, where has the year gone to!

The Halloween Party organised by the children in 6th class went well and the children raised €174.90.

Back after the mid-term and Joanne from Dublin Bus was very good with the children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class. She explained about the dangers of vandalism on the buses and showed a very informative DVD to them.

Once again this year 35 boxes were donated for The Samaritan’s Purse, Christmas Shoe-Box Appeal. The money from the ReadaThon has not been brought in as yet.

The children from 5th and 6th class will be going to the new South Dublin Arts Centre, on 26th November for a tour and workshop on Myself and the Wider World. The Centre will open to the public in 2009.

The big fund-raiser for the School, the Christmas Bazaar and Raffle will take place on Friday 5th December from 11.30am – 1.00pm. All are welcome, so if you’re free come and support our school please.

The children in Junior and Senior Infants with their teacher Mrs. Edel Beckett and Special Needs Assistant (SNA) Ms. Geraldine Healy and 1st and 2nd class with their teacher Ms. Caroline Rountree and SNA Ms. Bernie Dixon are going to the Helix for a production of Where is Rudolph? on Friday 12th December.

School News

We have had a few changes over the summer, what summer, says you !!!

Ms. Marion Hefferon, our Home/School/Community Liaison Co-ordinator (HSCL) for the past 8 years has left us and gone to St. Thomas’ as a Resource teacher, job-sharing. We are really sorry to see Marion leaving, but ever grateful for all the excellent work she has done in the school.

We are pleased to inform you that we have found a very capable replacement as HSCL, Ms. Madeline Lynch. Madeline will reap the benefits of the brand new Parents’ Room which has just been completed. The Special Education Team (SET) Room is also completed and will be operational shortly.

We were also sorry to lose our part-time caretaker, Ms. Lesa O’Dowd who has taken her family out of the school as the travelling was getting too much for her. We wish Lesa and the girls all the best in the future. Lesa very kindly found a replacement for us and Ms. Amanda Lawlor started with us on Monday 1st September.

During the summer holidays Ms. Edel McGlynn got married and now wishes to be referred to as Mrs. Beckett. It was a great wedding, the staff can confirm that!!

The Parents’ meetings will take place during the next four weeks.

We were delighted to welcome 12 new children into Junior Infants this year and their parents of course. Anastasia Kychygina has returned to us in 5th class, so we have 80 children in the school now.

The children in 5th and 6th class are doing a project on Legends from Ireland and around the World, and are going to The Giant’s Causeway on Friday 19th September.

Ms. Jane Barnes, our Resource Teacher, is doing a training course in Reading Recovery, which will be of great benefit to the children under her care. The course will take a year so Jane will be absent for some half days to attend this.

School News

Yes, it’s September and we are back to school, although you don’t normally hear from us this early in the year! However, I thought I’d let you know that at last the new building has started. It will be great to finally have a Parent’s room and a proper Learning Support / Resource Room! We do have a little problem though, the architect has informed us that we are short about €5,000. If you have any suggestions as to how we may raise this money or wish to make a donation to the school, we would be eternally grateful. Thank you, Iris. 452 7933

School News, June '08

These will be the final notes for this school year as things are getting just a little hectic here!

At last the long awaited news has come from An Taisce, that we have been awarded our first Green Flag. We are really over-the-moon about it and very thankful to Ms. Edel McGlynn and the Green School Committee for all the hard work organising everything. Edel attended the presentation of the Green Flag ceremony on Friday 23rd May, three children from the Committee attended with Edel. Now we have to get the flag pole in situ and organise the flag-raising ceremony here!

On 23rd April the children in 3rd, 4th with Ms. Annette Boles and 5th and 6th class were part of a record-breaking attempt called The Big Lesson, children in 120 countries world-wide were taught the same lesson on Access to Education for all children in the world. Thank you to Mr. Charlie O’Connor TD who was our independent witness to the attempt on the day. It was successful!

The children from 5th and 6th class went to the Gallery of Photography in Temple Bar on Tuesday 13th May. The title of the exhibition was “What Remains”by Alison Locke and Chris Anderson.

On Monday 26th May the staff will be involved in training in the Maths programme used in DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) Schools Ready Set Maths.

Our School Tours start on Friday 6th June with Junior and Senior Infants and Edel going to the Lambert Puppet Theatre and the playgrounds in Dun Laoghaire and Blackrock. 5th and 6th class are going to Royal Breffni, an adventure centre on the borders of Meath and Cavan. 1st and 2nd class, with Ms. Caroline Rountree are going to Sealife in Bray and Tallaght Adventure World.
Annette with 3rd and 4th class is going to Lullymore, which is a Heritage Park with an adventure centre. 5th and 6th class will be going to Bushy Park to play tennis on full-sized courts on Thursday 12th June with their coach Ms. Carmel Brookes.

Sports Day will be on Friday 13th June and we hope to raise the Green Flag on that day also.

The long-awaited Arts Festival will be on from Monday 16th to Friday 20th June. Alternative Entertainments have given us a full programme of Film, Construction and Printing and various different genres of Music.

The end of year Service will be on Sunday 22nd June in St. Maelruain’s Parish Church.

The Art Exhibition will be on Tuesday 24th June from 11.30am to 12.30pm.

3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class are going to Citywise on Wednesday 25th for a Sports Day.

6th class Graduation will be on Thursday 26th June.

Ms. Marion Hefferon, our Home/School/Community Liaison Co-ordinator has decided to go to pastures new from September. We really will miss her. Marion has been with us now for 8 years and has been an invaluable asset to our school. We wish her the very best of luck as she returns to her teaching career.

School will close for the summer vacation on Monday 30th June.

School News

Happy New Year to everyone from all the staff in our school; may it be a healthy and happy year for everyone.

We are coming to the time of year when we like to welcome back some of our past pupils on work experience. Thomas Duffy will be joining us at the end of the month.

Our architect, Ms. Ann Blackwell, sent us the planning notice to put up at the front of the school for the Parents’ Room and new Learning Support/Resource Room. Hopefully it will be going to tender soon and the building will commence when the weather improves.

The children in 5th and 6th class are taking part in an Enterprise Project called Bí Gnóthach, it’s a real learning experience for all of us and we’ll keep you up to date on the progress in the next notes.

When the class has decided what business they want to set up, market and hopefully make a profit from, it will involve some market surveying, business strategies, team work and financing. It should be very interesting. They have given us €100 to get started!

We will be involved in the Ecumenical Service again this year, for Christian Unity week, which will take place on Sunday 22nd January in St. Maelruain’s C. of I., in Tallaght Village.

The individual Parents meetings will take place before the mid-term break.

The mid-term break is Thurs 14th and Fri 15th February.
